The cryptocurrency, which has surged in value since the price of one bitcoin hit $1,100 in mid-November, has been subject to an increasing amount of attention from the mainstream media and regulators around the world.
The story of how one bitcoin was lost, along with the details of the hack, has also become a hot topic on the dark web, the unregulated section of the internet that is often referred to as the “darknet”.
It’s an area where users can browse anonymously, without the need to reveal their identity, and where they can buy drugs and even carry out murders.
The hack has drawn attention in the US, where Congress has already passed a bill that would make bitcoin theft a federal crime.
The legislation, however, faces opposition in the House of Representatives, with the majority of Republicans opposed to the bill.
Despite the fact that there is little information available on the internet, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed to Reuters that there has been a bitcoin-related hack in New York City, but it has not been revealed to the public.
Reuters reported that the US Secret Service said in a statement that it was “aware of a cyber intrusion involving a bitcoin wallet that occurred in New Yorkers”, but that it had not yet been able to confirm that the wallet contained any bitcoins.
The statement added:The Secret Service is aware of a bitcoin theft in New Orleans that occurred this morning.
The incident was reported to the Secret Service and we are investigating the matter.
We will have more information as it becomes available.
The Secret Service has been contacted for comment.
The Secret Services statement also said that the agency is “currently working to establish a path forward” in the investigation.
“While this investigation is ongoing, we will provide updates when we know more,” it said.
The Federal Bureau, which is in charge of enforcing US cybersecurity laws, is also in the midst of an investigation into the disappearance of the cryptocurrency.
The FBI said on Thursday that it is not ruling out the possibility of a criminal case against a person or persons involved in the theft, which may also be related to other incidents.
The FBI has previously confirmed that there have been cases of bitcoins being stolen from people’s accounts on the site Silk Road, where it was believed the cryptocurrency was traded.
The site was shut down last year after it was shuttered by the FBI.
Reuters has asked the FBI for comment on the possible theft.
